give what you do not have

"I have you, Lord. I have enough."

Simeon said this when he held the baby Jesus in his arms. Reflecting on Jesus's parable of the old lady and the two copper coins, a statement crossed my mind:

What do I not have can I give?

I was struck with the peculiarity of this statement. I cannot reconcile it with many talks and teachings saying "You cannot give what you do not have." How do I answer this?

I meditated and asked myself what I wanted to give more to the Lord. Time. "I want to spend more time with you Lord," I said in my mind, "I have no time, but I want to spend more time with You." I am saying this in the midst of everything that's eating up my time - preparations for a big event and delayed deliverables at work, a situation where I seem not to have time.

Yet the Lord called my attention - what I think I have or do not have doesn't matter. I have the Lord; that should be enough. So it must be with us, friends: we must give, give more at that, to our one and only generous God.
